Neuse River bars (New Bern NC)
The Neuse cuts through the same Yorktown and Pleistocene marine deposits as the Tar–Pamlico, with broad gravel bars upstream of New Bern. Less famous, less worked, and very kayak-friendly.
Kayak the river at low summer water and target the gravel-and-shell bars between Cove Creek and the US-17 bridge. Sift bar heads; surface-collect any heavy black/orange teeth from the pebble lag.
Public boat ramps at Lawson Creek Park (New Bern) and Cherry Branch. River bottom is public-trust; banks are largely private.
Surface collection on the streambed below the high-water mark is generally accepted; no bank digging.
- Tidal influence near New Bern — check both river stage and tide
- Powerboat wakes and barge traffic near the city
- Alligators at the southern bars
- Sun and limited shade on open bars
- The bars near Streets Ferry and Cove Creek are the productive ones
- Best after a dry August — the lower the water, the more bar surface
- Light kayak + 1/4-in sieve is the whole kit
