North Sulphur River
One of the best public Cretaceous river systems in America. Fresh flood cuts reveal shark teeth, mosasaur material, and big marine reptile country.
Target gravel bars, fresh cutbanks, and phosphatic nodules after rain events. This is a reset river, not a steady walk-and-pick beach.
Public bridge crossings and river corridor access near Ladonia; local knowledge helps with current conditions and safe entry.
Collect only from public access points or where you have permission. Much of the river corridor crosses private ranch land.
- Deep mud and undercut banks
- Flood pulses after storms
- Remote sections with poor cell service
- Late winter and spring give the cleanest bars before summer vegetation takes over
- Bring old clothes — North Sulphur mud is famous for a reason
- Look for phosphate pebbles and shell concentrations before you start digging deeper
